“All that the unsuspecting Bilbo saw that morning was an old man with a staff. He has a tall pointed blue hat, a long grey cloak, a silver scarf over which his long white beard hung down below his waist and immense black boots.” Soon Bilbo realizes that the old man is the respected Wizard. “ Gandalf, Gandalf! Good gracious me! Not the fellow who used to tell such wonderful tales at parties, about dragons and goblins and giants and the rescue of princesses and the unexpected luck of widows’ sons?” How will Gandalf’s arrival at the Hobbit’s house start a new and exciting adventure that Bilbo had never expected? How will this adventure change Bilbo’s life and his heart forever?
Bilbo Baggins was relaxing and blowing smoke rings in his little hobbit hole when he sees a strange old man walking towards his house. When they start talking, he realizes that it is the respected Wizard Gandalf. Bilbo gets introduced to Gandalf’s dwarf friends and the Thorin, the enormously important dwarf, in fact, no other than the great Thorin Oakenshield himself. The dwarfs that enter his house tell him about an adventure that they will start to reclaim their harps and gold. Gandalf, the Hobbit, and the Dwarfs set out the next day on the adventure even though the Hobbit didn’t want to. The Dwarfs make Bilbo a thief to help them get their treasure back. They face many challenges along the way. The Dwarves are captured by giant spiders and other creatures but Bilbo finds a way out even when Gandalf isn’t there. Bilbo was the hero and helped the dwarves face the dangerous and daring challenges along the way.
I think that Bilbo is a very brave and courageous hobbit and character. He used to live a normal hobbit life in his cozy little hobbit hole. Then, one day Gandalf visited his home and they set off on an adventure. Bilbo faces dragons, wolves, giant spider, goblins, and trolls on his adventure. He was also a thief and had to break his friends out of captivity and help get their treasures back. He goes on the adventure even though he doesn’t really want to. He also is brave to face Gollum, the creature who wants its magical ring back. Bilbo wins the riddle “game” that he plays with Gollum by chance. Bilbo steals the ring and it helps him become invisible which helps him defend himself and his friends later on when they face more obstacles. This can show that a calm, orderly, small, and unlikely hero can actually be the hero and make a big difference.
I would recommend this book to almost anyone who hasn’t read it before. The only hard part about it is that there are some words that will make it harder for some less experienced readers. I would recommend it to anyone around 4th grade and up. This is a very fun, exciting, and interesting book. I really love all of the suspense and the action in this book which adds excitement and makes it nearly impossible to stop reading.
