Title: Gathering Blue
By: Lois Lowry
Every child has a special talent. “And strong. My hands are strong.” Kira added. I like blue. Do you like blue? You know, it’s way more complicated to make colors on shirts in Kira’s times than now, and it’s hard to sew fast, too. That’s what Kira had to do. She had a way with needles and threads. You will get sucked into the book the second you open it. It’s a whole other world.
Gathering Blue is a fascinating story about Kira, a two syllabled girl, who has a gift of sewing. Her mother had recently died, and her father was said to have been taken by beasts in the forest. She has a leg that doesn’t work, so she can’t work or walk fast. Greedy women takes this advantage and wants to destroy her home and claim it as their own. Kira is taken to the court, and will be judged of where she would live, and if the women can get her land. She has do deal with all the women in her village, and what her special gift of sewing will bring her. If the court says that she can still live in her own land, she might still have a good life again. What if her land gets to the hands of the sinister women? Where will she live? Will she be sent to other places to live on her own? Is she the only person in her village that has a special talent? Will she find new friends? Does that mean that she will never use her special talent: sewing?
I once had a situation like one that Kira had. Kira was determined to finish the Singer’s Robe in time, and she look a lot of time and effort to work on the robe. Once I had a big project, and I also used a lot of time to do it. I did it very carefully, just like Kira had done it. Albert Einstein, I suppose you know him, (If you don’t, look him up.) he used a great deal of thinking and even for this super smart person, it took a lot of time for him to do some super hard equations. He also did them very carefully.
This book tells us that if you set your mind to do something, you do it, and you should try as hard as you can. It also tells that everyone has a special talent in something, and it could be put into great uses.
This book will teach you about dyeing colors and about Kira’s special life in her village. There are plot twists, and once you start reading it, you will be glued to it. (Well, at least I was.) Seriously! This is a very interesting book, and I am 99.99999999999% sure that you will like it. The background is very big, and you might not understand somethings in the beginning, but all your questions will be answered very soon. It’s like you’re not on earth, but in a place very similar to earth. Opening this book is like cracking a raw egg’s shell. Once you open it, you can’t close it.
